I don't see how it was her "wearing him down." Maybe the first couple of times, when they were physically near one another, she approached him. But after that, he was always the one coming back to her. The reason he changed his mind about her is because of who she is, and not because of anything she said or did personally directed at him. They actually spend long periods of time apart, doing their own thing.
As for whether or not it's a terrible relationship, that's all a matter of opinion. I don't find it any more "terrible" than the other relationships on the show, if it in fact is terrible.
