And don't you ever dare to write a story happening in Paris if you never been there. And so on. While I agree there's a lots of terrible smut [just like there is as much terrible sci-fi with impossible physics and in fact anything else you pick] there still is thing called research, that helps writing right about things never experienced on one's skin. Though experiencing them helps a lot.
