It was 600 pages long?! Yikes. I was into Twilight back in the day, too, but I gave up on Breaking Dawn. I'm glad something good came out of it, though, re: you and your friends writing fics together again. :D

Welp it's a nice hairstyle at least.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. They really went there. I. Huh.

Some fandoms are better than others, and you tend to get used to a common fandom style or characterization. While I also don't read much fic because I have trouble finding quality stories, I don't agree that they're just all OOC. For written works, it's different because there's only one author but in the case of TV series, there are multiple writers working together and the combined effort brings across the character, all in all. Of course, I also groan any time my least favorite or even most disliked writer penned an episode because their episodes always feel off for one or more characters.

I can't think of an example of this that I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, despite every shitty thing he did, I'm still rooting for him to find equanimity, and a basic degree of okayness.

It seems like that might be within reach for him, at the end.

Why wouldn't they? It sounds like a distinctive aesthetic and an underrepresented POV in speculative fiction.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
People have different taste? I don't understand the question maybe

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The two authors I tried out felt like more of the grimdark BS trend that I already don't like in sci-fi/fantasy at large.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, and that's why this secret puzzles me.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Since when does deserving have anything to do with shipping? ;-)

I don't think most people are trying to write the characters perfectly in character. I think characterization tends to be heavily influenced by fanon. Of course there are degrees of OOC and degrees of fanon OOC-ness. And everybody has their line for how far from canon a characterization can be before it's too much. Some people also have a line for how close to canon a characterization can be before they stop liking it.

But, bottom line, if you want your fanfic to be very faithful to the canon characterizations, it doesn't surprise me at all that most fanfic doesn't work for you. Because most fanfic authors aren't trying to write the characters the way you want to read them.

it's very common in some US/North American accents

I really like this hairstyle in anime, but it doesn’t work well in real life. It could just be my hair type, but it always gets undone even when I make it a loose braid.

There are a lot of fics I feel this way about. Some characters I have a firmer sense about than others. I usually am comfortable with a wide range of characterizations, but if something strays too far from canon and feels OOC I'm generally going to avoid that fic. Some characters I have a very strong sense of their characterization and so more things feel OOC to me. I still like to read other people's takes, though. There are just things that feel wrong to me that make it no longer seem like the same character and make me lose interest in the fic.

It sounds tacky as fuck and kind of pathetic, and if any of the authors are American also reductive and imperialistic.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Just looked it up and it’s 658. It’s gotten some mixed reviews too with people either loving it or hating it.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I was today years old when I learned you’re supposed to pronounce the first R in February.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

None of that makes any sense and it really sounds like you're just spoiling for a fight

How is it tacky? How on earth is it pathetic? How are you saying, absolutely sight unseen, that it's reductionist? Are you saying it's impossible for any individual American writer to be anti-imperialist? And if you don't know who it's written by, why are you leaping to these conclusions?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
da, but what makes the subject tacky or pathetic?

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The only time I remember anybody saying library like that was on The Simpsons as part of a joke (“Notice how I no longer say ‘liberry’ or ‘tomorry’”).

(Anonymous) 2020-12-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I never heard of this genre before, but if African sci-fi authors/sci-fi taking place in Africa are doing their thing in peace, I guess I'll be happy for them.

I have a hard time reading smutty slash fics because a lot of the time, the dudes are written in stereotypical seme/uke dynamics and don’t resemble the canon characters at all, not even physically (so many canonically buff dudes written as slim and willowy).
