It's a fairly straightforward difference: a soundtrack relates to a movie or TV show, a cast recording relates to a stage production.

The difference really only matters if you're in a habit of hanging out in theatre fandoms, but since I do hang out in theatre fandoms and see people screw it up, it bothers me.
