Re: Opinions on DVDs/Blu-rays/Hard-copies of media?

I don't buy new physical media anymore but I have saved the old ones for their extra material, like Futurama DVDs for the commentaries and Lord of the Rings extended set for all the bts stuff.

I've kept all the stuff I bought before but when it comes to adding new stuff I'm a lot pickier. There's only been one show I've liked enough to buy in the last few years and there's only a handful of music artists whose physical work I still buy.

When it comes to video games, though, I buy the physical copy. IDEK. I just do.

Omori - although up until earlier this year, the last game was Undertale back in 2017-ish. As much as I like to play games when I have the time, it's few and very far between (and even longer for me to officially 'finish' it).

Replaying Tales of Berseria right now. I love every single one of these terrible people.

Oh no, that sucks. :( I'm sorry.

I think I have like... 500ish discs between movies and TV series. With the advent of streaming I've definitely been pickier adding to my collection (usually DW or other stuff where I can't watch without subscribing to a whole new channel).

I also still buy CDs for imports and stuff (j-rock etc) that don't show up on Spotify or Apple Music.

Dead by Daylight if we're going by literal last game played. Game with a plot? I am working my way through Alien Isolation but I am DUMB lol.

Fellow "never finish but keep restarting Dead Space here". To be fair, I just gave up finishing most games and just concentrate on enjoying them!

I still buy DVDs, yeah, because I like having physical copies of shows I like. Sometimes streaming sites will pull shows, or they'll stop airing the reruns on some channel, or whatever. So if that happens, well, at least now I have the DVDs there for me to watch anytime I want.

I have a bit of a hard time getting used to streaming. I still like watching stuff on a regular TV channel, with a set time and a set schedule, and I find it easier to do rewatches that way, too. I can just go into the DVR and watch back any episodes I saved, I don't have to go to a site and sign in and go to this page and whatnot to find the show and everything, and I don't have to sign up for anything just to watch something. I'll do streaming if a show I like is exclusively on a streaming service and I really want to watch it, but if I can watch the show on a TV network, I will, and I prefer it that way.

I don't have a ton, but I do still buy DVDs and Blu-Rays because I don't want to subscribe to all the streaming services, and I can never keep track of what movies are on each service. (Like, if I wanted to watch Amelie right now, where is it? Hulu? Netflix? Amazon? IDK, man.)

1+ Same here, as well for other stories I enjoy that fall into the simple or aimed to younger audiences box.

I would never buy a non-hard copy of anything unless it was the only option, honestly. Seen too many people get burned when something gets removed from a service, or their console/computer died, or their account got hacked. If there's any chance of me seeing a movie/playing a game more than once, I want to make sure I will be able to access it even years down the road. I might stream something once to see if it's something I want to buy, if the fee is lower than buying a hard copy.

No Man's Sky is the only game I've been able to play recently.

nayrt but that’s the type of playthroughs I’ve been struggling to find, thanks for the rec!

I absolutely still buy DvD's of media I love or I know I'll want to rewatch so I can do so whenever I want. Streaming services are fine for me to watch something once or the first time, but I don't rely on them to keep the shows/movies on their service so I'll always buy a physical copy if I know I want to watch it many times again in the future.

Hades. I'm at that point when I'm finally able to beat the final boss not just out of luck but still got SO much to unlock and to get good at, I would have never started it if I knew it would be this grindey but here we are.

The Flame in the Flood.

I love the aesthetics and the music, but I’m not very good at it and I keep restarting the game when I get too far and come up against more inhospitable environments.

(I keep meaning to go back to Fallen London and/or Sunless Sea, but I haven’t managed it yet.)

Overwatch with my sister. By myself, Breath of the Wild.

Not in love with the style either, but it really works on the figurines.

Oh shit, I forgot to catch up with this show. Last I checked, I was halfway through season one. And this show ended like a year ago. XD

Re: Opinions on DVDs/Blu-rays/Hard-copies of media?

I don't buy them unless it's a show or movie that I love enough that I know I'll want to watch it multiple times. 99% of the stuff I watch, I watch once and that's it. I don't tend to come back to things unless I really, really love them because I would rather put my media time into watching new things that I haven't seen yet.

I've bought exactly two things on DVD in the past five years. One of those was a TV show that I've watched four times already so I knew it was worth it to purchase, and the other was a movie that I wanted the DVD of for all of the bonus features that were included. Aside from that? Streaming all the way.

Re: Opinions on DVDs/Blu-rays/Hard-copies of media?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
we find ourselves frequently buying dvds because the thing we just rememebered exists/was worth re-watchng is not available on ANY streaming service so what the actual fuck, I guess we have to buy it on dvd. A year later, it's on hulu. Great, but we wanted to watch it a year ago, not today.

I have some VHS copies of things that will never be found in another format ever (mostly: 90s videos of songs from subgenre artists) so I'm debabating having them copied just in case. I don't intend to share them so much as have them in a format I can easily access vs a literal dead format I can't touch.

I still have DVDs though no reliable DVD player, lol. (Heck, are they still making DVD players?) I think if I could get a hold of a reliable external CD/DVD drive for my computer, I'd just transfer everything I needed. But it's definitely been a while since the last time I bought a DVD.

Not OP, but I'm pretty sure the top part is the secret. And I'm guessing from the recent announcement, it's about The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which takes place in the past, with a complaint about a character in it.
