Research for a Fanfic

(Anonymous) 2021-08-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm planning a fanfic set around a fifth grade class in 2006-2007 and I'm trying to dig up memories and research kids toys and fads around that time. Many memories of high school are such a blur bc it was a miserable time for me.

Are there any folks here who have a better memory for being a kid (late elementary-early middle school) in that time?

This is how I feel about the books too; I swear I read them in high school and parts BOTHERED me but I always loved their friendship. I ended up picking up the 4th book but I don't think I ever ended up reading it

I think most people sub in RL situations in cases like this; an old man's old wife dying is sad because that's something that's pretty sad regardless whether we know the characters in fiction or RL people or not. I'll cry if I see it in a 30 second greeting card commercial or a news story, too.

Maybe I'm overly sensitive! IDK!

This is weird because I'd forgotten that I read this series (or at least a couple books out of it?) until this secret appeared and was like... that author sounds familiar? Those names... sound familiar? Bu I can't remember anything else. What about the books were problematic, OP?

Ooo, this secret brought to mind one of my absolute favorite games: Caves of Qud. The look of it (and playstyle) isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it hits all the right notes for me. It features procedural generation of names, cultures, and lore in a way I haven't seen anywhere else, and the setting is a lovely departure from typical fantasy worlds.

LOL I promise I ain't a Qud salesman, I just had to gush for a moment. I hope you find more games to scratch that particular itch, OP!

Uhhh I think in some way certain fads are also dependant on the region. I'm presuming you're talking bout a 5th grade class in north America?

I think it's something with some level of investment? This is something that genuinely fascinates me as a storyteller, how a character that appears only in the first fifteen minutes of the movie causes such an impact.

I think, for most people, is because they see their lives, their humanity, and the focus of it in that person. So when she appears as the light of the character's life, it FEELS as the light of that character's life. So when she passes away, the audience feels the same grief as the main character, because a main character's experiences become that of the audience as well, when written well.

I don't know if it's a lack of empathy or not, but this is the sort of storytelling prowess I would love to be able to achieve: Create a beloved character and an engaging story in an incredibly short story.

NGL, it's the reason I also like isekai as a trope, for all the memes and derision there is about it.

Sure, it's blatant escapism, but at the same time, it allows both the audience and the writer to be able to explore the world with the same baggage as characters set in it would be. It is a blessing in disguise, in my opinion, that allows you to see the world with the same awe as a new person.

Besides, some really amazing characters have come out of isekai-like stories: Ashley Williams from Army of Darkness, Fry from Futurama, Alice from Alice in Wonderland...

I’ve seen a lot of game designers abuse the hell out of this. I mean, the old “save your girlfriend” games didn’t really expect you to care about your girlfriend, but these “save your daughter” games expect you to be so attached to your daughter no matter how little characterization she gets.

In a certain game, my daughter got smeared into bloody paste while I watched helplessly from the other side of glass, and my reaction was clearly supposed to be horror. My actual reaction was “Is she supposed to be developmentally disabled? Why does she keep playing with her toys when there’s a giant alien about to kill her?”
