There's actually evidence they ARE using these small moves to distract from lack of progress on the lawsuit/structural issues. I'm in the middle of something, so can't find links yet

Almost all writing advice I see includes 'read books as much as you can' to hone your storytelling skills.

I hate to say it, but it seems likely that the decline is because people don't read anymore. They're all on social media.

I realise the bitter irony of posting this comment while my book sits abandoned on my lap. :/

I feel this super strongly and I'm not sure why it is. There are a lot of possible explanations - I don't want to discount the Landslide explanation, which is probably the simplest and most obvious one - but I do wonder if part of it is that the best writers from that period went professional eventually.

Maybe in a particular fandom quality could go down, together with activity in general. But all fanfic in all fandoms? It seems more likely that as you've gotten older, you've gotten pickier and more selective. Which happens to almost everyone.

Also older book fandoms have always tended to have the highest quality fic. (HP excluded.)
