There books were super big at my school (fundamentalist missionary school). Ugh. I couldn't even make it through the first one, even as a kid living in a foreign country devouring any english-language books I could get my hands on. Not these, though. These were just badly written and stupid.

Is it? Honestly couldn't make it past the first couple episodes. I just found the characters so irritating. Especially the woman. I wanted to punch her every time she was on screen. Then again, I don't much love Discovery either. I haven't watched past season 1 of that.

...How the FUCK can you read Bugsnax being about colonialism!? The bugs WANT to be consumed!!!!

Literally the entire thing is a blatant story about unhealthy coping mechanisms, depression and how people seek to fill the holes inside them with something. In this case, the Bugsnax exploit those holes. The bad ending with everyone dying is bad because they give in to their shortcomings and anxieties instead of grow from them.

oh my god lmao what a flashback. I only just recently got rid of all my christian clutter (been deconverted for almost 20 years) but I still have my copy of This Present Darkness for, idk, sentiment or something.

you're right, they're just not very good, and I'm dying at the thought that your parents were...well, sort of right. but they were far less fear-mongering than the whole Left Behind shit (which I thankfully never read). the only good thing about the concept was actually making use of the angels as warriors with swords and not just cute cherubs or gentle ladies.

The first episode is legit the worst of the whole show, and in the running for worst episode of the entire franchise (including all the ones that were clearly someone's personal fetish fic), but if you skip ahead to Moist Vessel and give it another shot, it might improve for you. It has toned down a lot of Mariner's worst bullshit by that point.
