Thrawn’s a fairly common problem. Writers want to write genius strategists, but they aren’t genius strategists, so they write okay strategists who keep outwitting people who really suck at strategy.

True. And Thrawn was interesting as written by Zahn. He was fun. But then the fandom decided he was the most brilliant thing ever, smarter and better than everyone, and it got really annoying.

Yeah. My theory is that basically a huge part of the fanbase really wants Star Wars to be what they understand as serious science fiction (which, to them, largely means military / thriller science fiction (on which I will refrain from commenting here)) and Thrawn was sort of the first character to come along and really cater to that desire.
