I don’t really care about this or them that much. I’m just glad they make dusty old white people mad lol

There is enough depressing shit in real life without sticking as much of it as possible into fiction.

I haven't gone through the Culture books in a little bit, but I feel like this is probably a misreading? There is tension between the existence of Special Circumstances and the broader values of the Culture, from what I remember - I would say that's often one of the themes of the books. And I definitely don't think that this kind of badassery is really Banks' attitude in writing the books. I mean, the Culture definitely *is* badass, but it's not really the main thing they're about.

YES

I have no idea whether gritty realism is still a dominant mode in sci-fi. Like, genuinely, there is so much media these days that I couldn't even guess what the dominant mode is. It's entirely possible that there's a ton of sci-fi out there that is joyous and follows genre conventions - how would one even know?

I've avoided everything I can about them in the media, but my roommate wanted to watch the docuseries. It's actually been interesting. Don't get me wrong, it's super dramatic and sometimes cringey. But it is nice to hear from them instead of from the tabloids or other media.

Because people who think scifi and fantasy are uncool feel better about liking the genres if they are "realistic."

Sigh.

Yes, it's cutesy. Yes, sometimes the kissing is awkward - because for much of the story bodyswapping happens when they kiss, so the kissing is not happening for romantic reasons. That includes the scene you screen-capped here.

A considerable amount of the fun is seeing the fairy's cutesy mannerisms translated into a very large, regally dressed man, and vice-versa with a pint-sized demon lord. The body-swapping scenes are HELLA fun.

Yes, the romance in aggregate is extremely tropey. A lot of things that people enjoy are extremely tropey, and that's okay. It also has a few non-standard relationship beats going on between other couples - someone gets exiled for loving the wrong person and has the nerve to be pretty happy in exile, the universe-dooming love story is entirely platonic, a very nice man gets told 'I'd rather we be friends' by *two* very nice women... Enough to keep things interesting.

It also has completely glorious visuals, and an absolute banger of a soundtrack.

Have I missed anything?

(It's okay to not like something other people enjoy. Just find something you do like and be happy, yeah?)

My brother's been watching, he's really enjoying it. *shrug* People like what they like.

Oh look its our favorite anti-megan secret maker again! Hey! how you doing!

Screams to the skies over how much anon fucking hates the word """realism""" when used for storytelling, and how vague and meaningless it has turned, to the point of only meaning grimderp.

Blame fucking executives who cannot tell good stories from their asses. It was Dumb and Dumber who insisted on a lot of nonsensical elements of the adaptations, which ended with the garbage fire that was the last season.

For a great example on a good series that is smart, but also idealistic, funny, bright, and has all of the reasons to be it, is The Good Place. Between all the Game of Thrones, the Expanses, and the Last Duels, and yadda yadda, I still praise Chidi's pocket-sized arc in the Bad Place Museum, in how he (didn't exactly lie) in order to prevent a soul from getting tortures and keep his principles. Character development that involves someone being smart without being cruel.
