I'm another random person chiming in but... there is a clear discrepancy in a lot of things. There are of course going to be badly written males as well but I can guarantee that the women are neglected a lot more in media. I was discussing this with a large group of writers the other day, and even female writers feel that they must work with male characters more or hide the fact that they are female to gain a more serious kind of attention. There are a few females that have been fortunate enough to be recognized doing work about women by women, but it is still a large problem particularly in media.
