Ok, two things, if you dont mind. What makes you assume that a) male chars aren't designed with sex apeal in mind and that anything else was added in as an afterthought and b)that female chars are?

I mean, for point a) can you think of a single male char that is not attractive? whats stopping any male from saying "Altair was made as fanservice, they just added the win and awsome in after to make the rest of the players happy".

And as for point b) unless you have proof to the contrary, arn't you just making unfounded assumptons on a persons (the developers) motivations based on their gender?

I'm defending developers as a whole here, unfortuantly this means it has to apply to the people who made Xblades. Im not saying I think they made her just for sex... it's entirly possible they made her for sex win and awsome, and it's entirly possible that they found her char to fulfill all those requirments, but please dont ask me to argue that i belive that with a straight face.

Other than that game, if you'd care to make specific examples, I'd be more than willing to argue them case by case, but if all you're willing to deal with are generalizations, I'm afraid I have to keep the defenses pretty general.

It's a fantasy piece.

After an auto accident a manga artist finds himself in a strange world, where magic is real, and he is in the service of an evil queen. There is also a servant girl who resembles his girlfriend, who was intending to propose to. Back in our world, she is in the hospital, recouperating from the accident and looking after his comatose body. The accident was caused by a crazed fan (who resembles the queen). The artist and his gf fight to get together through both words.

I'm a Batman fan, and I admit that some of the Dark Knight fans can be annoying? But some of them went and read comics, and are now fans of the canon I already loved. What's bad about that? NOTHING.

I don't know why Watchmen or Star Trek would be any different.

As for the icon, I didn't make it, but it's a spoof of a Saturday Night Live skit, iirc.

This is so full of win. I thought I was the only person who liked this show, or even knew it existed.

Almost every character in video games is attractive because if you're going to be staring at them for 10+ hours, they might as well be. As for why female characters are designed mainly for sex appeal: look at how many female video game characters wear needlessly revealing outfits, especially in comparison to the clothes of their male counterparts. How many times does the camera pan to look at their cleavage, or pan to give a tantalizing glimpse under their skirt? Now we even have breast physics, all to make boobs bounce "realistically." You give the example of Altair--how many female characters are dressed that modestly?

And even if you do find one that's wearing enough to be considered decent, you can almost be sure there's an unlockable bikini outfit hidden somewhere. I think the only game I've seen giving equal treatment in that area are the Tales games.

For your second point, my assumptions are hardly unfounded. This is a very male-dominated industry. The people who make games? Overwhelmingly male. The people who buy games? Overwhelmingly male. It's no surprise there's such gender inequality when so few women are involved in the industry in the first place. The fault lies especially with who developers often choose as their target demographic: teenage boys/young men. Unfortunately, these are the people who buy most games, and developers often pander to what they think they'll like: boobs and violence. This is the reason XBlades exists.

Of course this isn't necessarily true, especially as gamers grow older. Bioshock was a great success, and there was absolutely nothing sexy about it. I wish more developers would realize they don't need to overload a game with gratuitous fanservice to be successful.

One of the worst and most recent examples I've seen of pandering horny, immature teenage boys is the Dragon Age: Origins trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/sex-dragon-age/49052?type=flv). This is a high-fantasy strategy RPG, and they make a trailer called "Sex and Violence" set to a Marilyn Manson song.

While I understand the "WTF, this is the oldest ship!" comments... I have to agree. I wasn't even a fan of male slash until this movie, and then WHAM, I'm suddenly reading Kirk/Spock fic.

Ok, so really I'm reading everyone/everyone now, and I wish I wasn't the kind of fan that gets into it for the pretty faces or the porn.

Marking another name down for huge fan, loves the anime and adores the manga in a massive, craving manner. When the fandom was in its biggest swing (right around the time the VHS volumes were being released a few years ago), I considered myself read-only when it came to the fandom itself. I didn't have the network or the self-confidence to put anything out of my own... but as I got more involved in reading the manga, I realized that I didn't really want to dip into the 'what if' part of fandom works. I love the story on its own far too much, and I didn't want to get anywhere near the drama of shipping wars and whatever wank might arise. I just liked Trigun being wholly Trigun. So I missed pretty much everything.

... now, though, I'm getting to the end of the manga and I want someone to grab by the lapels and go AHHHH! at. Because... just... AHHHH!

I get its inconvenient, but them not cross posting is just as 'wrong' as you not bothering to check their new journal. You could have asked for an invite (I asked for an invite of someone I only vaguely followed). If it's your inability to get an account, I have a invite you could have. If its your dislike of that service, then use openID. If its the fact its happening at all, get over it. we can't control the world. I hate both sides for making this such an issue. Fandom creates drama in ridiculous places and ways.

Blades has been my favorite movie for like a year and a half now xD I'm sad.

Umm..let's see. I like most Disney movies, in particular Bolt, Lilo and Stitch, Beauty and the Beast...animal themed. Which means it should come as no surprise that I am a HUGE Fruits Basket fan - I also love FMA, Kaleido Star, Azumanga Daioh, Tenchi Muyo, and Kimba: The White Lion in particular.
