In my experience, people will use whatever fig leaf of social justice they can find to disguise their homophobia, or just to bash ships they don't like, and they end up sounding a lot like the homophobic dudebros.

The aro-ace fans that I know are

a) Extremely Queer
b) Cheerfully writing same-sex and poly relationships into their fic
c) Sometimes, yea, unto the fabled E rating.

So I don't know if OP is stuck in a hostile pocket of fandom or they're just extravagantly reaching, but boy howdy does this secret not jibe with my lived experience.

Rewatching Star Trek Voyager, and for some reason this go around I'm finding myself shipping Doctor/Kes. The two of them teaching each other, being friends, advocating for each other. It is just adorable and making me ship it.

And while the Doctor's actor is a lot older than Kes's, the characters in fact are closer in age given that he is just activated at the beginning of the show. In fact, they are the two youngest crewmen until Naomi is born.

What is everyone doing?

I will be crocheting my blanket again. I only work on it when watching horror movies so I'll have to pick something to watch. I might also work on my bear some more. I had to frog it so starting completely over. Other than that, listening to podcasts and going on some long walks.

I've seen people call homophobia on such sins as a prequel bringing in a character's canonical fiancee, so tbh I just stopped listening.

When people are that comfortable calling bigotry on their fucking ship wars, the word stops being useful.

I've seen mostly neutrality and support from aroace fans towards slash and explicit slash content. I've definitely also seen hostility towards them too on the basis of "why does EVERYTHING have to be romantic??"

I wouldn't say OP is reaching because I've seen spaces that act exactly like this.

Marth/Caeda from Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. Started playing an emulated version of the DS remake and am slowly falling in love with their dynamic. As much as I like more non-conventional romances, I still have a soft spot for your classic "prince and princess of different kingdoms fall in love" trope.
