I recently checked back on a pairing for a show I used to watch 15+ years ago.

As it turns out, a new writer has joined the fandom over the intervening years and they not only ship the pairing, they churn out a TON of fic. We're talking triple digits.

All of it is essentially variations on the same 8-10 stories, with the same tropes and conflicts but somewhat different window dressing.

AND I'M LOVING IT.

Screw originality, this is hitting ALL my buttons. It's like the author peeked into my mind, saw my favorite tropes and kinks and decided to write 100+ fics tailored specifically to ME. Scoff all you want about creativity, I’m riding the high of heaps of sheer idfic

me over here wondering whatever happened to "you are under contract and if you don't deliver the product on schedule, you will be dropped." is that not how publishing and most other media still works?

Not for big name authors that publishers know will sell and get them tons of money.

That's true for me in Melanie Rawn's case. I was a little disappointed she didn't finish the Exiles series, but as I understand it she had/has some pretty serious mental health issues and I can relate. I was surprised when she started writing/publishing again and picked up the new series at the library... didn't care for it. That series is now five books long and Exiles remains unfinished.

Scott Lynch is pretty well known, and he's married to another sff writer who's also fairly well known. IIRC the reason why he hasn't delivered the scheduled book is because of issues with depression and that is well known among his fans, so... yeah, the publishing company COULD drop him, I guess. But then they'd give up their shot at that last book and anger a lot of fans. And I'm pretty sure that Lynch would deliver if he could...

I have no real investment in buying vs. pirating, but I don’t think pirating should be treated as a punishment for authors. “I would buy this, but I’ll pirate it because you broke your contract with me.” If you’re no longer interested in what’s happening with that series, read something else you want more.

(I still need to dig up The Unicorn Chronicles at some point.)

It could be that because Exiles was what she was writing when she developed her mental health issues that those books are triggering for her but the new series isn't.

As big as their names are, I still wonder why don't authors get the pants sued off them. A legally-binding contract forces an actor to perform and deliver a work, and it is the same for directors. A writer that decides to write the millionth cookbook of a world rather than a sequel he was contractually obligated is... troubling.

I come to think it might be due to the author having far more power than the publisher, rendering the later helpless if the author gets easily distracted. Burning a bridge with the author, even if they are fully justified in doing so for legal reasons, would have no more money coming in for the publisher.

That would be my guess, too. I don't know if she's ever said why officially.

When it comes to super popular authors, they do have the most power. Most authors don't and are at the whims of publishers.

Same here. I can be patient - especially if there is sickness/family problems etc - but at some point, I really start to side-eye the "the author doesn't owe you anything" people cause yeah, sure... but I spent my hard earned money on those books and I know the only reason those authors aren't getting dropped for missing deadline after deadline is because they're big(-ish) names and the publisher doesn't want to risk another one snagging them up.

(This obviously doesn't apply to small and/or indie authors who do (and pay for) everything themselves while having a fulltime job)
