Paramount has rights from Roddenberry’s heirs and so does Kurtzman. It’s a jumble but he wasn’t under their contract when he created the universe so he owns that IP.

I actually didn’t know about any of that for years because JJ Abrams got all the credit for the reboot movies (which is a great example of what you’re warning against; they were a collaboration from the very beginning!).
