I'm not a huge fan of the trope, but from my limited understanding and experience, the original one is the confession version.
IF it was originated in the Japanese fandom, which I assume it was, the confession version was the only version I ever saw years ago, when it exploded in the novel section of pixiv. (for manga fandom I'm more into japanese fics than english ones)
It was a metaphor for words not said that slowly kills your true self.
You can see this trope a lot also in manga or strips where a character, usually a tsundere, has flowers/hearts around them to signal the fact that they have feelings that they don't say but only think/show. That's the fluffier version of hanahaki I think.
The stories usually end up with a good ending of "THE FEELING IS REQUIRED NOW WE ARE TOGETHER", but the required love is not what solve the hanahaki disease. It's saying the words.

IDK though. Maybe it was originally invented in the western fandom and then adapted into the Japanese one. Who knows.

I mean, I’ve never seen Citizen Kane, but it has been parodied and referenced so much in other media that I could probably hold my own in a quotes and trivia game. Goodfellas has reached close to the same level of pop culture status.

I'm probably getting hung up on the use of quote here. I wouldn't say I could quote A Christmas Story, even though I can and do repeat the most famous lines.

I think the use of quote here is throwing me off. Because I do understand not seeing something but being able to reference, but being able to quote it? I'm thinking of that more expansively I think.

FUCK I FEEL YOU
I love spicy food. I eat spicy food, but I moderate my intake because acid reflux. And it can get really bad.
So hearing all "haha basic white bitch thinks salt is a spice" makes me want to eat faces. Salted

If you’re repeating lines from the movie on purpose, you’re quoting it. That’s literally what that means.

To me that's quoting from a movie, quoting a movie means I can quote all the lines. So again, I think I was getting hung up on the use of quote.

Late to the party, but hard same on video games. The only reason I finally started playing ESO after mostly playing Oblivion and Skyrim for years and years was because my hard drive was destroyed and I just can't yet muster the mental energy required to reinstall both them and every mod I had as well every bit of additional software required for those mods to work. It's just too depressing right now, and ESO lets me at least be in the same settings, so it's an okay substitute, y'know? And hell, I finally started playing BotW on the Switch like 2 weeks ago, and yet here I am now replaying Pokemon Black 2 again.

DA

Fellow AroAce here. It's not a lack of interest, but a lack of attraction. There are plenty of of us who enjoy sex and/or romance, but because we don't experience sexual or romantic attraction, we're still AroAce.

I mean he'd been wearing them longer than me and I don't *recall* anyone making fun of him-- but it's not like I was with him all the time. I tended to avoid him as much as possible because he was the only boy in a fairly small school who I knew to be particularly vicious about making fun of other kids-- like, he WAS the bully, he just happened to wear glasses.
