Same ngl.

Somewhere I have a graphic that I made about the things that I thought the show was about, based on what I'd absorbed from fandom. It was hilariously wrong.

I remember watching the first couple of episodes of Supernatural for the first time after years of fandom osmosis, and finding it quite jarring that Sam is the main/viewpoint character and Dean was his estranged brother who he was only recently coming back into contact with. Because I'd seen so much Destiel content and Jensen Ackles' face everywhere, I just assumed Dean was the main/viewpoint character and his life/perspective would be the main focus rather than him kind of lurking in the background of Sam's story, at least initially.

most of them file off the serial numbers and then submit it to Amazon self publishing.

i agree that there’s a difference between fanfic with the serial numbers filed off and original fiction. it doesn’t mean i can’t enjoy the former or look down on anyone who does, but i am aware there is a huge leap in the creative and crafting departments.

Tbf this wouldn't be the first time a fandom has overstated the importance of a character to the point that when you watch the thing it's jarring at how little narrative time they get. In the case of Dean he is at least the second lead, but I've gotten into other shows where I saw fans acting like a side character was 'the main' and was suitably surprised to find out they were not even close to that.

IIRC from my time in Twilight fandom when that was the really big thing, there wasn't much in the way of disclosure about things being fics previously until Fifty Shades, when the publisher realized they could benefit from the fanbase already built for Twilight that would follow that particular writer. Note E.L. James's other works have been failures in comparison.

I've seen other authors do the serial file-off but branch into original work pretty quickly. Some are self-published, but I feel like in the past decade or so, agents have been actively pursuing popular fic writers.

I agree. I don't like them, but their harmonies are glorious.

I'm not super familiar with how it works but I assume most fic that gets the serial numbers filed off and published as original fiction are setting change AUs where the characters have completely different jobs and so the author had to introduce them and where they are in their life anyway/what is their major source of incompleteness in this particular setting. I think that makes it easier to turn the fic into an original novel because unlike most fic that relies on the audience already knowing the characters, you have to establish who they are/what their current situation is/what their relationship is with the world they live in. If you've done that and have already written fic that is at least novel-length with (e.g.) a romance novel structure already, I'm guessing it's pretty easy to turn it into original fiction.

LOL thank you for sharing this tidbit. it blows my mind that the TMNT fandom can sustain itself without all the delicious WINcest, but it turns out they're finding loopholes to still make it happen. go figure!

It's not evil to have money, or to use that money on helping your children start off in life. No one's embarrassed that they set up a college fund for their kids. Why does everyone have to start from the bottom to make their success matter?

What the Swifts did for Taylor was a risk - they decided to invest a lot of money in their child, and it happened to pay out exponentially. Wanting a better life for your children is also not evil, even if their life is fine as it is.

Wait... Are the antis making up the fact that Leonardo and Donatello are super connected twins so that they can justify quasi-shipping them in the form of smarm (affectionate closeness that blurs the line between platonic and romantic) without being pilloried by other antis for incest shipping, or are they making up that fact in order to try to convince shippers even harder that shipping Leo and Don is a Super Sin? Or like... a nebulous combination of both??

(Sometimes Fandom Secrets brings me dark tidings of fandoms I am not in and I can do nothing but stare in horror...)
