I don't know what this is. But...the quips, the quips, the quips! I understand what you mean, OP, because these days it generally feels as if writers view dialogue as an opportunity to produce one long, continuous series of quips, and I hate it. I hate it so much!
It's as if they're striving to have every single line be quotable, in the way that people quote 'Monty Python' at one another. But the thing is that you can't actively be trying to do that. To produce truly quotable quotes, you have to make some sort of resonant point, or achieve genuine humor or poignancy. What's more, dialogue is meant to do more than just produce quotes! And most of the time, for it to work, it's got to sound like actual fucking conversation, and actual fucking conversation doesn't involve people just being "clever" at one another. Humor, for that matter, usually does not come from people just being "clever" at one another.
Anyway, the long and short of it is that while I may not be familiar with these Tactical Breach Wizards, I feel your pain, OP. Or at least, I feel a pain that may overlap with yours.
