For a specific book, it can take an annoying amount of hunting to get it second hand, especially if it was just released. And for ebooks it’s not an option.

Valid point on the library though. Personally, with the exception of one author, I make myself wait to read it from the library before I can buy it. If I still want my own copy, I can wait for it to drop to pb prices.
