General reminder to play nice, please! If I have to keep freezing and deleting half the threads in here, this thread just won't happen any more. That doesn't mean pure politics threads go to GC, it means they don't go anywhere because it's clear they're only being used to start non-fandom arguments.

Was the recipient polite about it to you directly? Did they thank you for the gift fic?

Because if they did both those things, then I respectfully suggest that while it's normal to feel a lot of mixed emotions about someone not liking your gift fic, you did your best and that's what matters. Not everyone's going to appreciate your writing, but so long as they're gracious about it, that's the best outcome that can be expected.

If the recipient was rude or ungrateful, or indiscreet in complaining about their gift fic in a place where it could easily get back to you, then that's on them for being an asshat with no manners. I don't know if the Yuletide mods do anything about this sort of thing, but I assure you that if I were a mod and I found out someone was being a douchewaffle about their gift, I'd give them a piece of my mind and ban them.

But yes, I'd reconsider doing Yuletide or any other exchange in the future if this type of outcome is going to cause you distress. It's not worth it, and I'm sure there are others who would give your fic the love and appreciation it deserves.

I do hope we can play nice and avoid insults here because I'm not on social media, and this section sometimes helps me process what's going on. I know at least one other regular on FS is a liberal populist, and I've appreciated the ideas they've shared.
