Yeah, I agree.

Community is hard if you're only on Tumblr and AO3.

I do have fan communities I participate in on Twitter and Reddit. Reddit is good for discussing the shows and I like it for that, but it's kind of...anon and divorced from fic. Twitter has too many people who want to be BNFs. You can tell because they're the ones who won't follow other fans back. They don't want a community, they want likes and attention.

It depends on what you want out of fandom. As a place to engage with other fans/make friends, yes, it's always been that tiring. I write fic, answer the nice comments, grey rock the bad ones, and don't participate otherwise and tbh if there's been drama about my fic in the 25 years I've been writing fic in various fandoms, I don't know about it. I'm happy that way.

I liked the general cozy writing style, but this book had a few big problems and the "romance" was definitely one of them.

Another being that the author forgot women exist.

I'm sorry. I too hope she just took a break from internet things. It is possible - the internet can be very bad for one's mental health. Maybe she realized fandom was acting against it.

Also, I know in cases like these a month feels like a long time, but in "normal" circumstances it's not that long at all. She may come back.

I've been lucky to get into smallish but still active old/obscure fandoms in the past few years. I don't think I ever want to get into anything too 'big' again with the way things are now.

I've actually heard a lot of people claim fandom never used to be toxic. I find that hard to believe, but then again, my first fandom was infamously toxic.

Either you were lucky before, or you might be forgetting the more toxic elements.

Also, sometimes casual fans find the TV subs, and complain that "it's just a show" whenever someone tries discussing anything. Not all the subs are like that, but I have had to leave a few.

Yes and no.

1) younger people usually are less picky when it comes to making fandom friends so it’s easier to mingle probably if you are a teen
2) nowadays influencer culture makes people REALLY want to be the next big thing to make money off of it. Especially artists generally
3) It Depends, some fandoms are pretty low stakes still. Generally the huge ones have a corner for everyone and smaller ones are cozy.
In my experience ofc but it’s worth mentioning that I hated lj and my favorite periods of fandoming were early tumblr (circa 2010) and static fansites (circa 2000) days.
