There's got to be more to this story. Lara Croft was literally designed to be hot, to the point where there were complaints about the movie because the actress who played Lara Croft "wasn't hot enough." (Before it was released. After it was released, there were other reasons to complain about it.) It's not like you're lusting after Wendy Koopa.

Either this person doesn't like you and would have reacted like that to anything you said, or there was something offensive about the joke or where/to whom it was made.

Eh, I don't know if I agree with that. There are normies irl that think it's weird to say conventionally attractive characters are hot solely because they're fictional.

Conventionally-attractive fictional characters are made conventionally attractive in order to appeal to "normies irl," who make up the majority of the commodity-purchasing world by definition. To think that it's weird that someone is attracted to the character who was designed to be conventionally attractive in order to sell product is to reject the premise of most modern advertising, which is aimed at "normies."

Like, good for them to be immune to sexualized pop culture icons and all, but it's so wide-spread that reacting to the idea that someone was sexually attracted to the thing that was designed to be sexually attractive with disgust and loathing is not a normal reaction irl.

Now, if OP made this joke to a hyper-religious bible thumper who thinks that boobs and video games are the devil's work, then that reaction makes sense. But that's also an awesome example of an inappropriate person to have those conversations with.
