Re: What fiction tropes or events can you not suspend your belief for?

The main couple absolutely despising one another and that leading to them bumping uglies or falling in love. I can sort-of see the having sex part, but actually ending up having loving feelings towards each other is such a stretch it doesn't work for me. If there isn't a foundation of respect or understanding then I cannot ever envision it working out long-term.

And this isn't some 'the romance needs to be HEALTHY uwu' you can have unhealthy as fuck romances with two characters who love and respect one another, just for me hate-turns-to-love is not something I can buy. Hate-sex is as close as I can get but that's it.

I don't like instant hate to love. But if a fic is longer and actually takes the time to develop things and show the characters changing over time, I can buy that. It just takes more work and usually isn't how it shows up in fics.

It works for me, because most of the time the "hate" is just a personality conflict and not that one is a villain and the other is an angel.

That actually makes sense. The version of it I usually read does involve villains and heroes, so the extra work is usually necessary.

DA
Yeah, this trope is really depends. For example I don't really tend to like enemies to lovers as in villain and hero. I need a really good extra work for that. But I adore more rivals to lovers with people working out their differences or something they clash about.

But fandom calls both enemies to lovers

Yep, same! Similarly, the only enemies to lovers dynamic I like is when it's friends > enemies > lovers. Even enemies > friends > lovers usually don't works for me even if it's extremely slow burning.
It's the base of respect they built when they were friends that make all the difference. Starting from enemies/despising each other and then developing feelings for one another is difficult imho and people who can write it convincingly are very very rare.

AYRT.

I also find that in a lot of promoted 'enemies to lovers' stories the characters are barely enemies, they might think each other are dumb but they're pretty much automatically attracted to one another and the conflict of them falling in love is almost non-existent.

In fanfic enemies to lovers will take two characters trying to kill each other, or their families, and speed-run them to feelings without any work to make sense.

It depends for me. If the reason for despising each other is that they can't stand who the other person is, or their values, etc... I don't see it working out AT ALL.

If the reason is misconceptions gone wild (say they're from different countries and have been told lies about the people, and they come to realize they were wrong about the other person), then there's a chance.
