The cover of Anne of Green Gables. Written across it in an old-fashioned handwriting font: Every time someone declares they're not contributing to some foreign missionary fund in this series, I shout "GOOD!" at the audiobook.

Do you feel comfortable sharing which trial you were following, OP?

A lot of people don't regard true crime as a proper type of fandom, but it functions much in the same way as a huge fandom in that intelligent discourse can be hard to find. And because it's wider-reaching* than a book/TV show/movie, you get a lot of garbage-eating bottom feeders. It's a sad inevitability. Your best bet is probably to wait until the trial is over and the dust has settled, and a reputable podcast or youtube channel does an episode, or a decent documentary is made. For discussion... that's a lot harder and I don't know what to tell you, tbh.

* By that I don't necessarily mean it's more popular, just... more present in mainstream news where people who aren't necessarily into true crime or forensics or whatever can comment extensively and freely upon it.

NGL, that's kind of funny. I know that donating to missionary work was more of a thing back then and peoples' mindset about it was way different. As an atheist, I would never contribute a single penny to any mission that involved an attempt to proselytize or convert "the heathens".

I should give these another shot. I enjoyed the first one.

I know the biggest most recent one was that guy who murdered those four people and just plead guilty. Or the mushroom lady. OR the lady whose husband died but it was probably the cops who killed him.

I have no interest in Swift's music or Swift herself, but if I did hate her, it would be for the same reason I hate other billionaires. Misogynists always choose the dumbest shit to hate a woman over.

I slightly agree, but I would argue that Vir's story is slightly more important and interesting. But Zach's was great too.

And we're back to government being difficult. Client whose case we won today, it took all day and fighting to finally get the detention center to release him to his wife.

Serious question, why TSwift specifically? Surely that logic also applies to people who waste their energy hating on literally anyone?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-10 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
she's a hypocrite with her ecology compaign and flying her private plane so much. Her fans are cultists and her music is garbage. I have a lot of eergy so hating one more celeb is no burden.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally the only time I ever have an opinion on her is when someone brings her up. And that opinion is "vanilla cupcake with a little too much frosting". And then she disappears from my mind.

Unfortunately, true crime fans are like any other group of people. There are going to be a lot of idiots and people with agendas. It's very hit or miss with the more "classic" crimes when reading books because they'll try to blame the crimes on porn or homosexuality or being trans or whatever. You'll still run into those people today, and a lot of people get their info of more recent crimes through the rumor mill.
