I think "Brave" is good for what it is, and I'm finding myself defensive of it too. In that, I'm also glad it doesn't seem to garner any interest for a live action adaptation.

I could have sworn I’d seen a trailer for a live action Brave but it turns out it was AI. Phew! I’m with you OP, it’s perfect as it is. And I kinda like that it’s so unpopular because when I encounter other fans, we inevitably talk about all the stuff we love about it.

Which four have you watched, OP? If you're going chronologically, I'd say there are some that are just as good or even better, and I absolutely love the first series! The watermelon task is one of my all-time favourites; honestly, the first episode of series one is essentially perfect.

I hate coffee shop AUs but love cozy fantasy. High school was hell for me and I almost didn’t survive it but I love high school AUs LOL I love the fantasy of a positive high school experience I guess.

I truly, genuinely do not understand the appeal or even the point of coffeeshop/modern AUs. If I take my favorite characters out of my favorite sci-fi canon and plunk them down into the real world, they're just going to be ordinary guys because all of the specifics of their canon dynamic are removed when they aren't in their non-modern, no-RL setting and there is no way to replicate those dynamics in those settings. Where's the fun in that? They aren't the same characters at that point. I might as well be reading about Bob and Steve for all the connection that they have to their canon selves.

I have a handful of specific AU fanfiction stories that I like, but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of any AUs in general.

I do enjoy “what if” stories, but I’m never sure if that’s included in people’s idea of AUs.

Was typing up something to this effect but you beat me to it. This is the same reason I cannot remotely get into them, the canon settings are integral to the ways these characters act with each other and their worlds, taking that away would make them entirely different people and no modern AU ever takes that into account.
