There are some people who identify way too much with their characters, regardless if there's anything similar between them at all (it's usually the young or inexperienced writers that do this, I find, but that's also a huge generalization). They get offended because their characters are their babies. You aren't allowed to touch them with your scummy little hands; you aren't allowed to advance the plot if it means to hurt their precious brain-children in some way. It was the player, after all, who made this character, and she put so much time and effort and if yours are just there to make him mad then it's not fun anymore. And because she associates so much with hers, you must too, so your character must be a mouthpiece. If you insult hers? It's really exactly the same as insulting her directly. Everyone knows that it isn't possible that the player and the character have different viewpoints. You mean every little thing you say IC. If mine calls yours a stupid bastard, it means that I think that you are a stupid bastard.
Does the mentality makes sense? Not really. But they do get over it eventually, once they learn to distance themselves.
