The fandom's grown around you to the point where it doesn't need you any more. It happens, and most people (especially rarepair shippers) really wish it could happen to them. The only way to stay at the forefront is probably to dig up some energy and keep writing new fics, I'd guess.

I'd also wonder whether your contributions to fanon are as underivable from canon as you seem to think.
