But it is very canonical that he did have have a loving relationship with his disciples (Mary Magdalene included) - that is what it was so shocking that Judas betrayed him with a kiss. It was a mockery of that relationship - usually called agape by the Christian writers, but I reckon there was a fair amount of philia involved as well. The conversation with Peter in John 21 is beautiful for that reason; the different kinds of love are acknowledged. :D
