In my experience at least, most of the discussion regarding social issues in Japanese fandoms tends to focus on gender and sexuality, with racial issues being barely mentioned, other than the average moaning about lack of research in things like names and language. Although for what it's worth, I'd say you should go for it. Even if you end up preaching to the choir, at least it'll be talked about, which shouldn't be a bad thing.
