This. It's not the fact that Hester is scarred, it's the fact that Hester's not very nice. An awesome character, but not very nice.

But I blame poor marketing, a writing style that's a little bit harder to get into than standard YA lit, and the fact that they're actually pretty grim, as opposed to being 'dark' but ultimately just about how cool the settings or the powers of the characters are.
