For the record, I can see why you, especially as a kid, would think that, and I also did not realize Karma was Vietnamese until I finally found her given name, because I didn't follow the New Mutants crowd. I'm sure I'm oversensitive on this point, but I never got *why* Storm needed blue eyes and white hair to seem imposing and magical. Brown eyes are beautiful. (But it's not just her - Shadowcat's eyes vary between brown and blue all the time too.)

Superhero comic book art doesn't do diversity many favors, although current comics are better than the early days. Seriously, it's hard to tell when half the cast have blue or green skin and tentacles anyway. :P
