"It's magic" wouldn't work as an excuse either because the writers had been pushing the show as a sci-fi/fantasy/MYSTERY. The conclusion they gave us didn't really address the mystery they had built up. However, if they had simply portrayed the show as a sci-fi/fantasy without pushing the mystery elements, then, yes, the "it's magic" ending would have worked.
