I took a long time to get sold on AtS because he was way too broody on BtVS, and Buffy/Angel shippers insisting that they were ~perfect soulmates~ didn't help matters. When I heard Angel fans insisting that AtS was dark and morally ambiguous, I interpreted that as "Angel wangsts a lot."

I just starting making my way through the series about two weeks ago and I'm currently a few episodes into season 4. I couldn't have been more wrong. Angel is well-written and a pretty rounded character, and I like him more than I ever did on BtVS. Also, Angel has a lot of awesome characters like Lorne, Holtz and Lilah; I regret taking this long to start watching.
