Depends a lot on the fandom. But I prefer LJ as a way of communicating over facebook or tumblr or some of the others. There are still a lot of people here who don't get lost if there happens to be a lot of text on the page. It's a good place if you're in the fandom for fic, or if you want to waffle on about something for a lot more than 140 characters.

And yes, that can mean that you can get wanky for more than 140 characters too, but seeing as how f!s is the only large comm I'm on, I don't bother reading it when I'm not in the mood, and I'm actually here to spot which fandoms I should be buying books for at my library... well, let's just say it's easy for me to avoid the worst of it.
