Sometimes I like to imagine what internet fandom would have been like if it had existed several decades ago.
If Star Trek managed to make it big as a fandom when you had to rely on zines, can you imagine what a free-for-all it'd be if LJ was around while it was still broadcasting?
Or the huge wank there'd be every time a new Star Wars film was released? I bet you anything there'd have been obsessive Vader fangirls disappointed to find out that he was a) Luke's father and b) had a melty face. Not to mention all those Luke/Leia shippers squicked out by Return of the Jedi.
My favourite to speculate on is what M*A*S*H fandom would've been like, though. The shipwars, the wank every time a character left the show and was replaced, endless political arguments - it would've been beautiful.
