I hate Dean's Tam Lin more than I've ever thought I could hate a work of literature. I hate it so much I've fantasized about writing some self-insert fanfiction where I systematically assassinate all the obscenely pretentious classics majors who populate the book using various pieces of sports equipment while they gasp in bafflement at what a field hockey stick might be and compare the attack to some 18th century poem.
I understand that she has a certain style that doesn't make for the most dynamic reading, what with all the meandering diatribes on curtain shopping and dormitory architecture, but she also seems to fail at creating characters- not just likeable characters or relatable characters, but characters as in 'I actually believe I'm reading about a human being with their own thoughts, feelings and motivations.'
tl;dr
If you think that book was awful, it probably was.
