But if you don't like them then how are you supposed to care about what happens to them? If you don't care about a character then there is no emotional connection which also means there's no suspense in the story. It's different from hating a character or even loving to hate them, because you're still being engaged emotionally. Indifference just breeds boredom, and that's the last things these people want you to feel.
