I find as soon as one of the srs biznis crowd turn up then it's over, they seem to spawn at an alarming rate. Take tvtropes, used to be fun, bright, breezy, and quirky. Then some people started getting butthurt that they couldn't use references from it in their 8th grade essays and it was all "we must be academic" and the place is a shithole now.

Same in fanfic circles, people start getting embarrassed at the "fan" part of fanfic. And it's all "we can't be in the same group as people who buy fake Spock ears" and "waaaah we a fer realz aufors" and anyone who is in it for sheer fun of mucking about with your favorite characters is driven out or screamed down if they suggest they kinda like fun!

These people should all die in a fire.
