Agreed. Usually I'm not especially fussed about whether an adaptation is totally faithful as long as it's enjoyable in its own right, which I know Howl's Moving castle was for some people, but the generic triteness of the characterizations of Miyazaki's Howl and Sophie pretty much ruined the movie for me.
