Yeah, I agree, they are trying to force this tiny group into a protector/protected community, but it just doesn't work in my mind. They are too small, too mobile, have too little protection. And there's no reason for it either. There are only two kids and both are old enough to contribute. It's not like they are toddlers or babies. And what's more it's not doing anyone any favors. If the "protectors" get injured, the protected are just going to get slaughtered.
I get the feeling that the writers have never actually seen what groups do in survival situations. It's quite surprising actually. Kids become grown ups very, very quickly when it's a matter of life and death. They learn very, very fast. In some ways they are more emotionally flexible than the adults, more willing to ditch what doesn't work and find something that does. And they do it really at an astonishingly young age. We coddle our kids because we can, but when we can't, they want to survive.
