You've got a point there. If you're a fan of a character, then of course certain pairings involving that particular character will stand out more even if the pairing itself isn't actually that popular overall. I also agree with your last statement, as I personally find it difficult to enjoy a pairing if I don't appreciate what people do with the characters most of the time, and this is definitely one of those cases.
