Agreeing with the rest of the comments- crazy smiles are ~wonderful~.

And also, DGM has really really good slasher smiles. XD; Whoo!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
well aren't you a joyless asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. Me too.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, those warm fuzzies. I think I've only ever had that happen once. And sadly not cannon in all the universes. I'd probably have better luck if I went exclusively het instead of half/half.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I have this mousy blonde hair that looks grey in sunlight, and I often get people asking if I've greyed prematurely, so I i>definitely can't faut anyone for dying their hair.

Especially if they are in the entertainment industry. Changing your appearance is a big part of being an actor or entertainer. Why the fuck would anyone "lose respect" for people who are just doing their jobs? :/

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
No. It really is that simple. You're the one avoiding the problem. I'm not saying Women in Refrigerators isn't a godawful trope and I'm not saying that a lot of the comics fandom isn't disgustingly sexist, but sometimes hey, guess what? A joke about a female character dying doesn't inspire a ridiculous overanalysis like that. Sometimes, it inspires a laugh, like it would for a joke about a male character dying.

It's this really, really weird thing that occurs when you start thinking about women as complex people with different personalities and lives, rather than nothing but a blank, meaningless sheet of paper with "FEMALE" stamped on it. I think these people I'm a huge fan of came up with it. They're called feminists, I believe? People who believe in empowerment for women? But of course you wouldn't know anything about that, if you believe that women will faint with hysterics if a character of their gender is joked about in a completely gender neutral way. Not if you can't tell the difference between a gender neutral Simpsons joke about a character who happens to be female dying, and a sleazy, sexist lol over a legitimate and offensive Fridging.

I hate to paraphrase Freud, but sometimes a joke is just a joke, with no sexist or gendered intent behind it. And while I respect and highly applaud attempts to make safe spaces where jokes that really *are* sexist are banned (god knows it's nice to not have to deal with douchebags interrupting your discussions), if you can't say a single negative word about a female character, ever, because you interpret them all as an vicious attack on all women, everywhere and an attempt to get them to stay in the kitchen? Well, you obviously care more for a person's gender than their character.

And I feel sorry for those people who have to actually function in the real world. Because you don't eradicate sexism by cloistering yourselves in a hole like ancient greek women in the female section of their husband's house. You do it by fighting, and fighting, and fighting, and never stopping.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Even if the OP isn't American, The Simpsons is played in hundreds of countries around the world. I couldn't imagine anyone from, say, Australia or Europe or even Japan wouldn't know of the show.

[identity profile] zombieroadtrip.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I remember this movie cause my little brother was four when it came out, and every time he hurt himself he'd end up shouting, "THERE GOES MY ULCER!"

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the problem is that "elsewhere" is a lot of immature sexist fanboys trying to pretend they've had sex once. I put up with scans_daily for a long time because it was the least of all the evils, until it got too exhausting and I found I couldn't discuss anything anymore without sweating and worrying for about ten minutes over every post as to whether anything I said might offend someone.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think all of Dave's friends know he's not as cool as he claims to be. I think Jade thinks Dave is cool because of who he is and not because of what he does. I also always thought her "sooooo coooool"s were purposely overdramatic and stuff? And I also don't think Jade's way of supporting Dave has ever been to reassure him that he's as cool as he wished he was.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
And the animation right here is supposed to be blocky, because it's parodying another show's opening credits. And it's not "terrible", it's supposed to be like that, and I thought it was impossible to exist without knowing about the Simpsons, even if you've never watched it.

Forgive me, but I'm VERY protective of this show('s heyday).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think the secret is saying that because OP has drawn fanart of Charles Xavier, psychic from the X Men movies, and Shawn, fake psychic from Psych, someone's bugging them to write crossover fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I certainly think there can (and should) be a happy medium, but the mods at scans_daily have drawn some pretty clear lines in the sand and it seems like no one can find the motivation to create another community. I've heard people talk about it, but it never seems to materialize. It's a shame because more options would certainly help, and I do feel bad for people who aren't comfortable in the majority of fan spaces but feel that the modship at scans_daily is too heavy handed.

xxxHolic was published in a seinen magazine, but it's emphasis on relationships between people and romance is stronger than it's emphasis on horror, which makes it work as a josei to me. But I know it counts as a seinen too.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having trouble trying to understand this secret, so correct me if I'm off the mark here, but I think people object to RDJ being chosen over the Muppets, and the reason for said choice being a ignorant dismissal of the Muppets on the basis of their medium without judging them on their own merits. Not for calling them "puppets".

I get so infuriated when works are judged by "lol it's a sitcom" or "lol it's a cartoon" or "lol it's just a tv show". Like, the Order Of The Stick IS one of the cleverest and best-plotted stories I've read in a long time IMO, and I don't care if it's a stick-figure webcomic. And the Muppets was objectively better than Sherlock Holmes, even if I'd probably succumb to TEH HOT and vote for RDJ if you asked me while I was watching the latter.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-01 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of don't get this. I was bullied a lot for being gay and this storyline idea doesn't offend me because Kurt told Kurofsky off/forced him to see things somewhat differently, and therefore, in my mind, Kurt wields more control than Kurofsky does. I get that not everyone's like me but given my history, I think that my opinion is as valid as anyone else's on the subject.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I only ship Luke/Leia in dark!AUs. They're REALLY hot there because the fucked-up-ness is just perfect for incest. I can't ship them otherwise though, partly because they don't make a good couple at all even if I love their friendship/siblingship/whatever, and partly because Han/Leia is my OTP to end all OTPs, first OTP I ever had.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
As others have said, congrats, you have the same standards as practically everyone else.

And you sound like one of those people who would dismiss female characters for acting too "girly" or not fitting into your standards, regardless of whether they're well-written or not. Or maybe I'm wrong, hopefully.

Also, it looks like you're just looking for a totally unique character, which is impossible because every character can be shoved into a trope regardless of how original the writer tries to be. And that's okay! Cliche =/= bad character! What's important is how the writer uses the character cliche within their story, and how they make the character their own person rather than being entirely identified by a theme.

Imagine someone writing/drawing a horribly OOC fanwork of your story and have the entire fandom fall in love with it. At some point people start to forget how your character actually behaves in the canon and their whole reading experience gets skewed by it. See: Homestuck

God, this reminds me of those crazies at Fanficrants.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Kermit the Frog = childhood. Nostalgia can be serious business if you push the right button.

I just wish I knew what the OP was talking about. If I had to choose between RDJ and the Muppets, I'd choose the Muppets. Because Kermit. And Rowlf. And Fozzie. And the Sesame Street Muppets. Sorry, RDJ!

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
*applauds everything you said*

As for your last paragraph, my advice is to get that female character to DO something really memorable, so she's remembered for her actions as much as her personality traits. Actions speak louder, show don't tell, yada yada, you know the drill :)

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-01 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
The Sesame Street Muppets are Muppets, just a different section of them. Kermit was a regular on Sesame Street for 20+ years. Jim Henson was deeply involved with both shows/groups. Also, the SS Muppets show up at the end of The Muppets Take Manhattan, in the wedding scene, if that wasn't a big enough clue.

his imaginary friend the mammoth...

Mr. Snuffleupagus, a.k.a. Snuffy. And his little sister, Alice.
