HP fandom (movie wise anyway) is a great example of this. Gary Oldman isn't a young man either, but his Sirius was no doubt inspirational. In fact, almost all of the "grown up" characters--many of whom were shipped pretty rabidly--could be put in this category.
I think what people need to keep in mind is... in Avengers fandom, we're not all 20 years old. Many of these fans (yes, the movie fans) have been fans of the characters for far longer and are in an age bracket entirely. Even saying that, there are those who are just attracted to older actors. My personal favorite (who is on my original list up there) has 19 years on me and I AM an "older" fan. LOL
It does definitely depend on the fandom and on the actors involved, but in this case, it would seem like a pretty flimsy excuse.
