You've gotta start somewhere, and most of us do it very ungracefully. When I first got the itch to write I was too young to be imaginative, and did the age-old self-insert because it was fun and easy. So yes, I'm right with you.

You're totally right, and what's the point of writing about them if you're going to make them really OOC, or butcher canon? Why are you writing about them if you have to twist it to like it?
