I don't know... I can sympathize losing the love of your life, I can even find some minute sympathy for being unable to relate to your child.

But then it comes to outright neglecting and abandoning that child, and I can no longer relate.

And then it is revealed that said character also cloned the wife, over and over again, in the form of an empty and unloved vessel, that would sacrifice herself at a moments notice because her live was given no value.

And all of that doesn't even include the whole 'wife becoming gigantic, mindless fighting mecha' thing. Wherein the love becomes weirdly bestial, since the creature made of her material is no longer human or anything close to human in mentality or spiritual life.

Through it all, he maintains the belief that he was correct and that what he is doing is right, and for the good of the many. Which is completely crazy.

And the affair with Ritsuko/Ritsuko's mom. As if completely using a woman that had been in love with him to further his own agenda hadn't been enough, but to do the same to her daughter after the mother was killed (probably on his orders, too!)?

Not really sure how he could be the most sympathetic. Sure, most of the cast had a fuckton of faults and issues, but Gendo seriously dialled it up to eleven.

The Ritsuko's mother killed herself (after strangling a little girl).

Are you one of those people who buy the meticulously planed out from day one scheme? Because then clearly Yui is the real monster.

The Ritsuko's mother killed herself (after strangling a little girl).

I just checked the manga where it's not said how she died, though it seems more like murder than suicide to me. That must have been a relatively short time after Yui's death, as it's said that she was the only member of GEHIRN that didn't join the newly-established NERV.

It's in the anime series where Ritsuko's mom strangled a young Rei, right? I don't have it so I can't check, did they really say that Ritsuko's mother killed herself?

I don't get what you mean?

Yeah the anime.

As I recall you have Ritsuko's mother get infuriated by Rei, and she ends up strangling her. Shot of limp body 'oh god what have I done', hard cut with the sound implying something heavies fallen a long way, and a shot looking down at the bloody chalked outline of Ritsuko's mother from a high height (where she'd just strangled Rei).

The implication is fairly strong, and IIRC they make some coded references to it as well.

Now there's a couple fan theories as to why exactly Rei made the comments that made Ritsuko's mother murder her, and one of them is that Gendo intentionally encouraged Rei to make them, in an attempt to drive Ritsuko's mother into such an act - but the people who buy into that theory also tend to buy into the one that Yui intentionally killed herself and became unit 1 to drive all the events in the series.

Wow, it's been a long time since I watched the anime. I remember the scene where she strangled Rei, but not how she died. I thought she'd died through a gun shot.

So the theory is that Gendo wanted Ritsuko's mother to kill Rei? What would be the point of that? Or that she'd kill herself when Rei was replaced with a new clone?

Gendo wanted Naoko to commit suicide, and Rei was a tools to an end there.

Yes. After strangling the first Rei, she has a breakdown and then throws herself into the(?) MAGI room thing.

Wow, I even forgot that bit!

THAT MUCH MORE, can't understand how he'd ever be the MOST relatable.

I guess I can get relating to him and then being worried by that fact, considering the rest of the fandom's (rightful) reaction to his transgressions.

But I still can't see him ever being anyone's most relatable character. I mean practically every action he has taken that had any impact on the series and the characters within has been both completely selfish and damaging to multiple people around him.
