I reaaally want it to be something like Irene being a British cop whose deductive skills were way better than Sherlock's, and the failure to be the smartest person in the room sent him into a burning spiral of drugs and alcohol that eventually ended in with Sherlock waking up in New York with no idea how he got there with an email on his phone from Irene telling him to stop being a drama queen.
