Besides that, I find it very odd that you don't trust him to say the truth, but you do trust him not to be violent. I'm not saying they're similar, but if you have to say someone must be lying in order to defend them it's odd to me.
Whether or not it's bragging lies in the ear of the beholder I guess, to me it sounded like that.
