It's understandable to have favorites and all, but if your love for a series dies along with a single character, I'm inclined to think you were only a fan of that particular character, not of the series as a whole. There's nothing wrong with that -- different strokes for different folks and all -- but I can understand why some people would find that hard to respect. If they actually give you grief for it though, they're just being asshats. No one's in a position to judge others for how they enjoy a series.
