For some reason, when it comes to sexuality, people go more by stereotypes (especially appearance-related ones) than by whether or not that person actually exhibits any attraction to a particular gender.
Apparently my whole family thinks I'm a lesbian when I'm actually a gay guy? They see that I act masculine but think I'm a girl, so in their eyes, that makes me a lesbian. Let's ignore that I have never once indicated any attraction to women (because I'm not attracted to them).
Seems like if you're a girl and don't look butch, people will assume you are straight despite all evidence to the contrary. (Whereas if you do look like a butch girl, everyone will assume you're a lesbian, again despite all evidence to the contrary.)
