I don't think she was depressed because he didn't return her feelings. I believe he did, but when we take into account what he was doing at that time (infiltrating Fenris's werewolf ranks) and knowing his character, the more likely reason was a) she was terrified for him b) he was trying to push her away because spending time with his kind fed his self-hatred about the whole werewolf thing and all.
